Backup & Restore
LocalKeys' vault consists of a single folder, making it easy to backup or copy.
All vault data is encrypted, so as long as you've set a secure password, there's no security threat even if you store it on external SSDs, cloud storage, messengers, email, etc.
Vault Location
The vault file is stored at:
- macOS:
~/.localkeys - Windows:
C:\Users\%username%\.localkeys
The vault folder is hidden by default.
To view it, press Cmd+Shift+.(Dot) on macOS, or enable "Show hidden items" on Windows.
Manual Backup
You can backup by copying the vault folder to your desired location.
You can store it anywhere you want such as external SSD, cloud, messenger, email, etc.
To prevent data loss, you should close LocalKeys first before backing up.
Migration
To transfer LocalKeys to a new computer:
- Backup vault from existing device
- Install LocalKeys on new computer
- Copy backed up vault to new device
